Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these Legends baseball players from the swift completion of their appointed games. Well actually, three games were postponed because of poor field conditions at Leach Park. Not bad though, considering the big chill and sloppy fields on Sunday.
Managers, keep those letters and post cards coming so that we can include your game summaries in The Commish Corner each week. Please email write-ups to Bob Korn Bob@PlayLegends.com. Thanks, guys.

Flying Squirrels Tie With Hurricanes
by Curtis Nadeau
Squirrels try to tack on against the Canes in a tight game. |
In six head-to-head matchups between these two teams dating back to the spring of 2013, the record is split right down the middle at three wins a piece. That theme held strong Sunday as the game ended in an 11-11 tie.
After five innings of back and forth play, the score stood at 4-4. The Squirrels offense came alive in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, plating seven runs on six hits. Their short-handed pitching staff and shaky defense had a little trouble during these frames but held firm, only giving back four runs.

With the drop dead rule to take effect in less than five minutes, the Squirrels trotted out for the top of the ninth with a three run cushion. Their “this is over” attitude coupled with the umpire’s decision to add 20 more minutes of game time ruled the day. The Hurricanes got a few big hits from the bottom of their lineup and plated three runs in the top of the ninth. They were then able to get out of a bases-loaded jam to have the game end in a tie.
The outcome of this game was quite a gut-punch for the Flying Squirrels, whose interpretation of timing rules came to bite them as they only showed up for eight in this one.
The baseball gods did not look kindly on the Redlegs in week 2, as they squandered a couple of scoring opportunities and fell victims to the well placed squibbler, the dying quail, and the bases clearing single, in a 14-9 loss to the Gashouse Gang. But ultimately, the Reds had to give props to the Gang for their relentless play!
Matt Gaugler pitched another effective game (4IP, 3BB 3H, 3R, 0ER).
Thunder South continued with another solid offensive performance in a 13-9 win over the Rebels.
Offensive standouts were Chris Colletti Jr., Nick Colletti Sr., and Brent Whelan with 3 hits each. Matt Strickland, Brian Zinda, and Dave Harmon with 2 hits each.
Chris Colletti Sr. and Nick Colletti combined for 9 solid innings on the bump.
Isotopes Chill For Second Win
by Raf Martinez
Isotopes and Padres got their game in despite freezing temperatures and a damp field. Padres jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first, but Isotopes starter, Lew Wharton settled down and allowed no more runs through 5 innings pitched.
The Isotopes broke it open in the 7th inning, scoring 4 runs behind RBI by Gino Noll and Lawrence MacDonald. Nate Taran finished on the mound, allowing only one more Padres run, to end the game in favor of the Isotopes 7-2.
Isotopes were propelled on offense by Dave Hughes, who went 3-5 with 2 runs scored and 4 stolen bases and fantastic defense work, highlighted by Martinez's slick glove-work at first base.
